Legionnaires giving proceeds of U17 hockey game to Rebound

One of this area’s most recognizable non-profit agencies will be the recipient of a Hockey Canada fundraising initiative at the upcoming World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

The Sarnia Legionnaires of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League have been chosen as the local host partner when Team Canada Black takes on Team Finland at the Sarnia Arena on Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. and they have decided to donate funds from the game to Rebound’s youth initiatives.

“The people who are putting the tournament together (Hockey Canada) offered us one game where no money would go back to them, but instead would go to a local charity,” said Legionnaires director Theo Bet.

It was easy to pick Rebound, he said, because the Legionnaire players fall within the age group the organization serves.

All the proceeds from the game, minus the cost of the ice rental, will go to Rebound.

The Legionnaires have not set a specific goal, but Bet hopes the local community will come out to support Rebound while watching players with the potential to be in the National Hockey League in a few years.

“We’re thrilled to see the game,” he said. Rebound’s marketing coordinator said his organization is grateful for the gesture.

“It’s a great fit for us,” Jack Poirier said.  “Our mandate is to support youth and strengthen families.”

Tickets are $10 and available at Aqua Pools on London Line or through any director of the Sarnia Legionnaires Hockey Club

“For ten bucks, it’s a no-brainer, and the Sarnia Arena is still one of the best places to watch a hockey game anywhere,” said Bet.
