The Yard Sales Begin! – by C. Scott Holland
The first trade of the New Year with the trade deadline looming is a rather significant one. The West Conference’s last place Lambton Predators, who are struggling to make the playoffs and are only two points behind the St. Marys Lincolns for the final playoff spot, have made the first transaction.
The Preds sent vet Ryan Fraser to the Chatham Maroons on Sunday.
The hard-nosed 20 year-old defenseman had appeared in 30 games this season and scored six times along with 16 assists while amassing 97 penalty minutes. During his four year GOJHL career Fraser is among the top active leaders for defenseman. His totals are 125 games played, 22 goals, 72 assists for 94 points and a whopping 413 penalty minutes. Of his 22 tallies, 14 have come on powerplays.
Terms of the one-way deal were undisclosed.
The Preds, who have had a past history of dealing top prospects at the trading deadline, still have three blue chip players in forwards Ethan Sarfarti and Brenden Trottier and defenseman Franco Sproviero.
Sarfarti sits 7th in GOJHL scoring and leads all Western Conference players in scoring.
Rumours were circulating in late December that Trottier had been dealt to the London Nationals but no official announcement has been made.
Sproviero is 7th in GOJHL scoring among defenseman and tops in the Western Conference.
The Forest Fire Sale may continue.
