Flyers Add Vet Mark Manchurek To Roster – by C. Scott Holland
It was an unexpected addition but one which the Leamington Flyers certainly needed to bolster their offense. On Thurs. Jan. 28th they announced the signing of former Vipers and GOJHL rookie top scorer Mark Manchurek.
Of the three Manchurek triplets, Mark was the one who was never drafted by an OHL team. Instead via a hard work ethic he became a member of the Windsor Spitfires for 2014/15.
During his rookie year with LaSalle Manchurek played in 48 games and lit the lamp 31 times while having 34 helpers for 65 points. He had only 14 penalty minutes plus four powerplay goals for the Vipers and played in 12 games the following season before moving up to the Spitfires. With the Spitfires he had appeared in 34 games scoring three times and adding three assists.
Mark’s brothers were Joe and Robbie. It will be a homecoming of sorts for Mark. His brother Joe played for the Flyers in 2012-13 and has spent the last three seasons with the OHL Oshawa Generals including a trip to the Memorial Cup in 2014-15. Mark is now an alternate captain in Oshawa. Brother Robbie was the lone defenseman of the three. He has played for Ridley College in St. Catharines for two seasons. Ridley is one of the top prep schools in all of Canada.
Flyers’ general manager Kevin Hopper said, “We think he’s going to fit in really well with our team. He’s a big winger that can put the puck in the net.”
The 6-foot-1, 194-pound power forward Manchurek was not playing hockey this season until signing with the Flyers. Leamington are seeking their third straight Western Conference title in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.
Manchurek who participated in the 2014 GOJHL Prospects contest is scheduled to don sweater number 9 for the Flyers and could see his first action on Thursday night when the Flyers host Chatham at 7:10 pm.
