Too Hot in Sarnia
Well it was eight years ago, and things normally do heat up to a fever pitch whenever Strathroy and Sarnia meet up. In this case it was February 14, 2008 as the visiting Strathroy Rockets were playing the Sarnia Blast.
Their game was interrupted with a fire alarm during play. A sprinkler head erupted setting off the alarm causing the two teams to leave the ice and the fans to evacuate the building. The small blaze came from a corner concession stand in the standing room area.
105.7 myFM’s Chris Soares and Lincoln Louttit call the play, which the fans just seem to ignore. After all there was a hockey game going on with the Rockets’ Ben Thomas battling Sarnia’s great John Faulkner in goal. The Rockets won the game 4-1. The game winning goal was scored by Eric Beauchamp, one of the most despised Strathroy players to ever skate on Sarnia ice. Five days later the two teams would hook up in the opening round of the playoffs. Strathroy won 4 games to 2. The Rockets would then lose the semi-finals to Tecumseh in 5 games.
Tecumseh would claim the Western Jr. B title and go on to win the Sutherland Cup that season eliminating the Golden Horseshoe Champion Thorold Black Hawks and then the Mid-Western Champion Elmira Sugar Kings in the Sutherland Cup Finals.
