ROCKETS LOOKING FOR NEW HEAD COACH
Strathroy Rockets’ general manager/director of hockey operations Mike Bondy announced that the local Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League team and head coach Jason Glover have mutually decided to part ways.
Glover’s tenure ended after just one season behind the Rocket bench. He guided the team to a 16-27-2-5 record over the 50-game regular season. The club finished in eighth place in the nine-team Western Conference securing the final playoff seed. The Rockets were swept in the first round of the playoffs in four straight games by the LaSalle Vipers.
Rocket president Don Windsor, along with his board of directors and director of hockey operations Bondy, are looking for a massive change in direction for the hockey club. For a six-year span from 2005-06 to 2010-11 the Rockets were a top-four club with two first place finishes and a league title to their name. Since then the team has floundered for the past six years finishing no higher than fifth place in the standings. They have been knocked out of the opening round of the playoffs the past four seasons with a combined playoff record of 1 win and 16 losses.
Commenting on Glover’s parting, Bondy reflected, “I thought that Jason did a good job. We thought that it was in the best interest of our team to go into a little bit of a different direction and find the right guy that was going to guide us to the results and the team we wanted to be.”
Bondy stated that the decision to part ways with Glover was a tough one. Glover played centre for the Strathroy Blades for five seasons from 1988-89 to 1992-93. Bondy and Glover were both teammates with the Blades and at the professional level.
Looking ahead Bondy said, “We’ve always said we want to work by committee. We’re a small community. We’re a small group of people that look after this team and this organization, and I’m not saying that the previous staff didn’t, ‘cause we did. I’ve had no issues that way as the general manager and I want to continue that process to provide what we do provide here in our community – a good place for good hockey players to play, to have a good atmosphere to play under and enjoy the game of hockey.”
The search for a new Strathroy Rockets head coach has begun. Upcoming events for the Rockets include their Spring Evaluation Camp on May 6 at the West Middlesex Memorial Centre, which is open free to the public. The annual Rockets Golf Tournament will be held this July at Caradoc Sands.
